چکیده

We propose cyclical persistence as an important factor in‡uencing the timing of innovation. Schumpeter (1939) argues innovation should be concentrated during recessions when its marginal opportunity cost as forgone output is low. We propose the timing of innovation should be a¤ected additionally by innovation’s marginal expected return. A simple theory is presented, showing higher persistence raises the cyclical response in innovation’s marginal expected return, makes the dominance of innovation’s marginal opportunity cost more di¢ cult, and therefore drives R&D pro-cyclical. We carry the theory to an industry panel of R&D and output. Our estimation results suggest persistence helps to account for the observed cross-industry di¤erences in R&D’s

Identification of Cyclical Banks in Iranian Banking System (Focus on Leverage Ratio)

T he cyclical banks have different behavior than other banks. The structure of the balance sheet in cyclical banks is different from anti-cyclical banks. The cyclical banks have a relationship between leverage growth and asset growth while the other banks have no relationship between asset growth and leverage growth in the banking system. This relationship depends on the structure of...

Inter-temporal Accrual Persistence and Accrual Anomaly

Prior accounting research argues that diminishing marginal returns on new investments drive lower persistence of accruals relative to cash flows. Macroeconomic research documents that marginal profitability is counter-cyclical, which implies that diminishing marginal returns on new investments are more pronounced during periods of expansions than recessions. Linking the cyclicality of diminishi...

CEP Discussion Paper No 1319 December 2014 Reservation Wages and the Wage Flexibility Puzzle Felix Koenig , Alan Manning , Barbara Petrongolo

Wages are only mildly cyclical, implying that shocks to labour demand have a larger short-run impact on unemployment rather than wages, at odds with the quantitative predictions of the canonical search and matching model. This paper provides an alternative perspective on the wage flexibility puzzle, explaining why the canonical model can only match the observed cyclicality of wages if the repla...

Why Do More Polarized Countries Run More Pro-cyclical Fiscal Policy?∗

We study the cyclical behavior of fiscal policy to explain why some countries exhibit pro-cyclical fiscal policy stances–being expansionary in good times and contractionary in bad times. We develop a model that links the polarization of preferences over fiscal spending to the pro-cyclicality bias. We then present evidence that social polarization as measured by income inequality and educational...

Explaining procyclical male–female wage gaps

Our analysis based on the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth for the 1978–1999 period concludes that men’s greater representation in cyclical occupational groups, such as craftsmen, operatives, and laborers, more than accounts for the gap between men and women in the cyclicality of real wages.
